In the past few decades, it has been revealed about a rapidly increasing number of biological functions that they are characterized by repeatable, predictable changes: rhythmicity. This achievement fundamentally altered our understanding on the biological control mechanisms and affected our view on almost every field of both basic research and the applied biology, including medicine. Even a new branch of science is being evolved targeting rhythmic functions in the living creatures: chronobiology.

The series of papers, presented here, is devoted to promote this principle. "Rhythmic biological functions. The role of the biological clock in the living world", held on April 26, 2002 under organization of the Biological Section of the Local Committee of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, in Pécs. The one day symposium attempted to collect the leading Hungarian experts, interested in this subject, from various field of biology including plant physiology, biophysics, zoology, cell biology, bio-statistics, as well as veterinary and human medicine.

The topics of the papers vary not only on the target species but also on the forms of the rhythmic functions ranging from physical and biochemical processes to reproduction and sleep, and also cover a vide range of period times from milliseconds to years.
