This book is a salvage operation in the sense that it proved impossible to retrieve all the information on the excavation conducted over fifty years ago, especially because the excavator was not able to participate in the processing and evaluation of the data, as she passed away in 2001. The author, therefore, attempted to reconstruct finer details with the help of the excavation drawings, the section drawings and the information contained in the excavation diary. The labels of the bags containing the finds included the exact depth from which they had been retrieved with an accuracy of 20 cm, and their position in the 2x2 m grid system, enabling a fairly precise identification of their former context. The description of the finds thus forms a coherent system presented in the tables together with the depths and the square of the grid system in which they were discovered. This presentation enables an accurate reconstruction of the stratigraphic sequence of the site as well as that of the relative chronology of the finds, and provides a suitable basis for comparison with other assemblages.
More than 200 illustrations with detailed descriptions of the finds and graves with extraordinarily rich grave goods guide the reader through the exact stratigraphical sequence, supplemented with a chapter on the interpretation and significance of the Csőszhalom tell and its findings. The publication of this 50-year-old excavation most certainly contributes to a better understanding of the Late Neolithic in the Upper Tisza region.
